You may all have noticed that there haven't been any new challenges for the last week. It appears that interest in the challenges has tapered off. So here's the question to all you fan fic readers and writers...should the challenges resume? Let us know by 11:00 a.m. Eastern time on Friday, July 7, 2006.

Well since we have a post reply button I'll post a reply. lol I personally like the Friday challenges because we can get creative. I just haven't seen one presented to us as of late that makes me want to put aside everything to write for it. The Tuesday ones require too much thought and really, I'd like to not have to think about S3 all that much. Razz I know some people are busy with summer school and vacations so we don't get to read their works as often. Another thing could be the voting. I know I have no clue who does the Friday votes and sometimes I wonder if the Tuesday vote will be like a popularity contest.

At any rate, I vote to continue with them and maybe I'll see one I want to work with. Smile

i think the chalenges are fun, especially friday ones because it's more creative in a way, but more people has to participate in writing and voting and i agree with lamentamini, i would like to know who votes for the friday ones and on what criteria...anyway, i think it's great, it takes me away from my usual stories but also helps me to use my imagination more

I say why bother. It's the general concensus that you have to be one of the popular authors to win around here anyway. The little or lesser known authors do not win no matter how great their story is.

I have to disagree with that. We've had some lesser-known authors win some of the challenges. And most of us, at some point, were lesser-known authors...you don't just post your first story and instantly become popular. Authors who put in the time and effort and write good stories WILL be recognized.

I just happened to click on the forum one day and decided to post my first fanfic because it planted a thought that I could run with. I think the challenges help the less creative of us (well, me) to have a focal point when you don't have the creativity otherwise to originate your own story. It does seem that the "popular" authors are the ones that win by the "slaughter rule", so it does come across like a popularity contest. But judging is a very subjective thing, so who knows?

I have really enjoyed the challenge submissions to date! I'm also surprised that more writers haven't participated. Maybe it's not been posted prominently enough, or folks don't like being "told" what to write about. They're based on S3, which was a major disappointment to many, obviously! It truly is a "challenge" to fix that train wreck. At the same time, I think that's what fanfic is all about--creating the stories we want to see with our drama, twists, turns and endings! It's something we can control, and the encouragement and feedback from the readers is awesome!

I'm already convinced that I'll get "slaughtered" fishing when the vote comes up for my topic, but that won't deter me from participating again if the spirit moves me.

I certainly have enjoyed Very Happy so many of the stories overall, even those not ranked as well, because they touch a chord within me. So many unfinished stories, too, that I'd love to see get fleshed out!

Art is in the eye of the beholder. read On to new challenges! rock

You can find the name of the winner in the Challenge post thread. That is to say, look at the thread for say Friday Challenge #2 and you will find at the end of the thread who the winner is. Not all Challenges have winners announced as of yet.

Make it anonymous until the results are published. The same writers would probably win because they're good.

I agree... a good writer is bound to become popular just because they are, well... good. That's pretty simple logic.

I love the challenges, especially the tuesday ones! They give me the opportinity to look at s3 differently... And I indeed as B&TF said, It tekes you away from your usual story...

The popularity contest thing... Hmmm I havent looked at it that way... I dont think its true though... I think a lot of good stories won...

And arcaysee... You think you'll be slaughered? By me? Shocked Why's that?

For me the challenges are not about winning... Its about THE CHALLENGE of it... And I love it... I love to take a scene and try and fix it...

*shrug*

Lets say I really hope the challenges continue... I love them!

i say keep it going. i loved the challenges. i get pretty bogged down with writing running fics and all the controversy it sometimes raises. i've really really and i mean really loved having to come up with something within a given guideline... i hope you keep 'em going

oh and there was a good suggestion at one of the previous posts. why not make it anonymous? i mean, find a way to post the challenge stories anonymously? that may rule out the popularity-contest feeling...

The anonymous challenge submission, allowing blind voting, may make a difference, but it may also backfire. Readers are drawn by known entities, so if they see a "favorite" posted, that may cause them to read challenges that they might not otherwise. Who knows?

As far as my comment about potentially being "slaughtered" when the vote happens--it's more because I noticed a faster climb in the number of views of my "competition", who is a great and prolific writer Wink , when this was my very first post. I admit to some initial discouragement, but I'm really just glad to be in the number Exclamation Readers just post wonderful feedback for everyone, and it's nice to get stroked.

I say again--continue the challenges! The first one that I saw inspired me to write my first story--something I had never thought to do. I was perfectly content occasionally reading stories and forum topics (and waiting for folks like mariebrandt to post again!). Now, I'm proud to be part of this awesome group of writers who share their visions of this show through their creative writing!
